THE GAZA CEASEFIRE AND THE US EMBASSY TAKEOVER BY IRANIAN STUDENTS: WHAT DO THEY HAVE IN COMMON
Asking the question on who is instrumental and crucial – president Joe Biden or President-Elect Donald Trump – in turning the Gaza ceasefire into a reality is like asking the question on who is instrumental – President Jimmy Carter or President-Elect Ronald Reagan – in getting the hostages in the US Embassy in Tehran released during Inauguration Day in 1981.
Actually, the answer to both is quite straight forward. In the former, it is not Biden or Trump that is instrumental in securing a ceasefire, but Hamas’ steadfast refusal to budge on its fundamental position on the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes, the release of all Palestinian prisoners that were jailed or detained by Israel without due process of the law (the numbers of these Palestinian detainees to begin with, are more than the number of Israeli hostages captured by Hamas on Oct 7), the entry of humanitarian assistance into Gaza, the end of genocide of the Palestinians, and a lasting ceasefire.
For any negotiation to be successful, parties to the conflict must exhibit a firm commitment to their fundamental position but at the same time be flexible enough on other secondary details to reflect the realities on the ground.
Hamas has shown finesse in achieving all this in agreeing to the latest round of ceasefire negotiations.
The same can’t be said of Israel and the US under the Biden/Blinken Administration which fails to see that the reality on the ground where more than 46,000 Palestinian civilians – babies, children, women, the elderly, healthcare workers and journalists – are massacred is simply genocide, without making any serious dent on Hamas’ military capabilities which are growing by the day and have caused the death of tens of hundreds of Israeli soldiers and tens of thousands wounded and incapacitated.
Whatever the outcome of this ceasefire in term of whether it is long lasting or not through the violations of its terms and conditions by Israel, as what we can see in the Lebanon ceasefire where the IDF’s violations are in the tens of hundreds, the mere fact that Israel has agreed to it, is a sign of its defeat because its military is really overextended.
This is also in line with what former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said many years ago in relation to the Vietnam war that a conventional army which the IDF is, loses if it does not win. The guerilla which in a way Hamas is, wins if it does not lose.
After over 15 months of fighting Hamas and facing Hezbollah’s resilience, Israel has failed to achieve strategic victory. Throw in Iran’s looming presence and the Houthis raining ballistic missiles on Israeli targets, and you have a European settler colony reeling under its own hubris.
Israel doesn’t want peace; it wants a tactical breather. It needs an off-ramp (freezing the conflict to fight another day) to mask its inability to crush Palestinian resistance, let alone confront Hezbollah or Iran. A ceasefire allows Israel to claim a propaganda victory without addressing the reality: it has failed to extinguish the flames of resistance in Gaza or Lebanon.
What about the 1979 hostage crisis? Again, it was not Reagan or Carter but Iran (Ayatollah Khomeini) which was instrumental in releasing the hostages.
From Day One, Iran has said the 1979 hostage crisis, arising from the US turning its embassy in Tehran into a den of spies, could be resolved quickly, if the US returned the Butcher of Iran, the King of All Kings, the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, to Iran for a trial on the ruthless atrocities he had committed on the Iranian people throughout his rule via the torture and mutilation agency he had created with US help, the SAVAK.
Pahlavi, in the midst of the Islamic Revolution in Iran which began in early 1978, had exiled himself to Egypt, Morocco, The Bahamas and Mexico, before entering the US on October 22, 1979.
Two weeks later Iranian students seized the US embassy in Tehran and took hostage more than 50 Americans, demanding the extradition of the shah in return for the hostages’ release.
Extradition was refused, but the shah later fled for Panama and then Cairo, where he was granted asylum, thus leaving behind a power vacuum in Iran, just like what had happened to Bashar al-Assad in Syria on Dec 8 although Bashar fled to one country only.
When the US refused to accede to this extradition request, it is like Iran responded by saying, “well, if you (US) want to play the long game, we can play it too”, putting the US under a tremendous psywar pressure, and clueless of when the hostages will be released especially after Carter’s futile attempt to release the hostages militarily, when US fighter planes sent to rescue the hostages accidentally hit each other and crashed in the desert (friendly fire or Allah’s fire?).
By early 1980 (an election year), it then dawned on the US that Iran will not release the hostages before the November election to ensure a defeat of Carter at the hands of Reagan.
Reagan who had been beaten hollow by an unelected President Gerald Ford at the Republican primary in the 1976 election saw this as a golden opportunity to win the covetous presidency, after securing his nomination as the Republican presidential candidate at the Republican primary in the 1980 election.
He skillfully and brilliantly maneuvered himself into this advantageous position during campaigning without giving any opportunity for the Carter campaign to accuse him of using Iran’s refusal to release the hostages for his political end.
Iran ingeniously understood that during a US election year, the release of the hostages will boost tremendously the prospect of a Carter’s re-election and were willing to release the hostages if only Carter would return the shah to Tehran.
But Carter underestimated Ayatollah Khomeini in thinking that Iran will not have the stamina to go through its refusal to release the hostages because of the series of punishing sanctions that Carter had introduced, though relatively milder compared to the sanctions imposed by the demented Biden on Russia through the agency of the opportunist and imbecile Tony Blinken in relation to the Ukraine war.
Moreover, no matter how much Carter wanted to return the shah to Iran (because it would definitely ensure his re-election), he knew that it was impossible to do so without being accused of pandering to his own personal political end to win the re-election – a situation of between a rock and a hard place.
But all these became a moot point when the Shah died in Egypt on July 27, 1980 (perhaps an assassination plot of the CIA to checkmate Carter? … who knows.)
And so, by Oct 1980 (October Surprise? … no concept of an Oct Surprise back then), many were not October-surprised (pun intended) when there were predictions that it would be a landslide victory for Reagan, with Carter going down in US history as the weakest president of all time the US had ever had (a fate awaiting Biden, it seems).
Of course, Carter made amends in his later life before his recent demise by being always on the side of the oppressed people of the world. A great man indeed when one conscientiously admitted the mistakes of the past and made amends.
The hostages finally set foot on US soil on Jan 20, 1981 – Inauguration Day (familiar right?) – after in captivity for 444 days.
The Gaza Ceasefire: Beyond the Headlines
It all started early last month on Dec 2 when President-elect of the US of A, Donald Trump issued a dire warning that if hostages held by Hamas in Gaza are not released before his inauguration on Jan 20, “there will be ALL HELL TO PAY in the Middle East, and for those in charge.”
Although it’s not clear who he meant by “those in charge”, at that time many analysts took this to mean Hamas that will be on the receiving hell (end) if the hostages are not released by Jan 20.
Now fast forward to Jan 14 – Telegram news channel is reporting that a Knesset (Israeli parliament) member Yitzhak Kroizer is saying: “It turns out that Trump’s threat to “open the gates of hell” if no deal is reached is primarily intended to pressure us, not our enemies.”
Why is this so?
Because Israel has finally agreed to a somewhat similar ceasefire proposal agreed by Hamas in May. The proposal in question had been outlined by US President Joe Biden and later agreed by Israel and Hamas which involves “a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza.”
But at the last minute, as usual, Israel stipulated further conditions which Hamas disagreed and the proposal went down the drain.
However, a “breakthrough” was achieved shortly after midnight on Monday (Jan 13) according to Reuters, with Israel’s Channel 12 describing the developments in Doha as “dramatic”, and claimed that a ceasefire could be announced as early as Tuesday (turned out to be late Wednesday).
This is almost 8 months later after Biden/Blinken fumbled on the ceasefire proposal due to their fear of Netanyahu and their incompetence – one is demented, the other is the imbecile, former paper pusher boy of Hillary Clinton.
Israel has finally accepted the proposal but is actually awaiting for the approval of its War Cabinet (that’s how tedious and crooked Israel is because with all the hooray even in Tel Aviv with the announcement of the Qatari PM, Biden and Trump that a ceasefire has been signed, it can still go down the drain if the War Cabinet disapproves it).
Latest news on this is that the War Cabinet in its meeting yesterday (Jan 17), a day after the ceasefire was signed, has approved the ceasefire, much to the chagrin of the ultra-right hardliners like Ben-Gvir and Smotrich, whose threats of withdrawing their parties from the government to ensure its collapse should a ceasefire with Hamas is signed, is proven to be impotent.
According to the Associated Press, Qatar has pressured de facto Hamas Head, Muhammad Sinwar to accept the deal, while Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff has reportedly done the same with the Israeli delegation during the negotiations in Qatar.
What actually happened behind the scenes showed it was Trump, and not the demented Biden or the “usurper” Tony Blinken who took advantage of Biden’s illness to become the de facto President of the US of A, that played a crucial role in putting pressures on Netanyahu to accept the ceasefire. Time and again, Biden and Blinken just do not have the balls to pressure Netanyahu.
It is very interesting to dissect how Trump, well-known as a true blue Zionist managed to do this when he’s just a President-elect and not the President yet.
In this sense it is quite unprecedented in US history where a President-elect has the balls to run things seamlessly on a very difficult issue of bringing Satan Yahoo to his knees.
Here’s the timelines for the behind-the-scene happenings that have led to this Gaza ceasefire:
- The first salvo began unexpectedly on Jan 9 when Trump shared a video on his Truth Social platform critical of Netanyahu, containing disparaging insults and criticism of the Israeli PM claiming he has forced the US into ‘endless wars’.
- The video showcased American professor Jeffrey Sachs calling Netanyahu a “deep, dark son of a bitch”, and says he is “obsessive” for dragging the US into endless wars.
- Sachs blames Netanyahu, saying “that war came from Netanyahu, actually” and adds that from 1995 onwards, Netanyahu had a “theory that the only way we are going to get rid of Hamas and Hezbollah is by toppling the government that support them. That’s Iraq, Syria and Iran”.
- He further states that until today, Netanyahu is “trying to get us to fight Iran” before going on to swear at him.
- Trump’s masterstroke in this lies in there being no comment by him in the post other than “listen to this man (Sachs)”. This started tongue wagging whether he is a true blue Zionist or just a ZINO (Zionist in Name Only).
- By the way, there is a term RINO in American politics invented or rather revived by Trump if I’m not mistaken to refer to his Republican opponents, and yes, RINO means Republicans in Name Only.
- Next, when the new rounds of negotiations among the mediators took place in Qatar the next day (Friday, Jan 10), Trump unexpectedly sent his Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, on the same day to Doha to deliver a message to the prime minister of Qatar that Trump wants to see a deal within days.
- On the same day too (Jan 10), after the meeting with the Qatari PM, Witkoff called Israeli officials in Tel Aviv that he will be in Israel the next day (Sat, Jan 11) to see Netanyahu in the afternoon, but was told by Netanyahu’s aides politely that although Saturday is the Jewish holy day of Sabbath, the PM will gladly meet him only at night.
- The terse and blunt rejoinder from Witkoff, a fellow Jew, shocked Netanyahu’s aides to the core. Using swear words (in the words of Haaretz, salty English is used) Witkoff was reported to have said that “Sabbath is of no interest to me,” and he doubled down on them the need to have a peace deal before Inauguration Day.
- His message was loud and clear, and thus in an unusual departure from normal practice, Netanyahu yielded to the request and met Witkoff in the afternoon of that day, instead of at night.
- In the meeting with Netanyahu, Witkoff again stressed Trump’s goal of reaching a deal by Jan 20.
- What’s more interesting is that during that meeting, Trump’s envoy is able to get his way in insisting that members of the Israeli negotiations team and Biden’s Middle East adviser Brett McGurk, who was in Doha, joined them (Netanyahu and Witkoff) in a conference call to discuss the status of the negotiations.
- So it is very clear the pace of event showed that it is Witkoff that is in control, not Netanyahu. This is proven further when at the end of the meeting, Netanyahu instructed the director of Mossad David Barnea, the Director of Shin Bet Ronen Bar and IDF general Nitzan Alon to travel to Doha immediately in order to push forward the hostage and ceasefire deal.
- Witkoff emphasized the Inauguration Day goal several times during the meeting with Netanyahu and the Israeli negotiating team.
- “Witkoff is playing a crucial role in the negotiations right now, applying pressure from Trump,” an Israeli official said then.
- The Israeli official noted that there has been a narrowing of gaps in the negotiations between Israel and Hamas in recent days, but some gaps still remain.
- He said the parties are not yet “within the zone of agreement” but are very close to it.
- The Israeli official added: “There is a chance of reaching an agreement, but it is a serious challenge. The heads of the Israeli negotiating team would not have gone to Qatar if they did not think an agreement could be reached. It will be difficult, but the team will do its best to reach a deal.”
- After the meeting, Witkoff reportedly headed back to Doha to continue the efforts to reach a deal, a US source said.
- Witkoff, in a true fashion of a master tactician declined to make any comment when asked by the media and its anonymous sources (compare this to Blinken who on almost all his trips to the Middle East to negotiate things is fond of talking to the media – a publicity hungry guy, you bet).
- Another interesting point to note is that a few hours after announcing the ceasefire on late Wednesday (Jan 15), Netanyahu issued a disinformation via a statement that Hamas has still not responded to the ceasefire proposal.
- The whole might of the Israeli media establishment went up against him by saying that the statement issued by the prime minister was false, and that Hamas has already responded and agreed to the ceasefire earlier on Tuesday.
- This must be the work of Witkoff who knows the power of the Jewish media, and had galvanised them towards acceptance of ceasefire, under the direction of Trump who has become more media savvy since winning the presidency.
We must realise that even if Trump is a ZINO, it will be very difficult for him to fight all at once the US Deep State he has resolved to fight during his campaigning because of their huge tentacles in the US corridors of power.
This is proven during his first stint in power where many of his decisions were countermanded by the Deep State.
It becomes clearer by the day that the strength of the Deep State is not so much vested in the highest office holders but rather the very same machinery of administration and institutions run by the ranks and files that are indoctrinated with neo-liberal and neo conservative ideologies, which is deep-rooted in their support for Zionism.
You take away the highest office holders with a change in administration, and these ranks and files will be leaderless, and toe the lines of their new elected leaders, so it seems, because they are civil servants not politicians.
But the trick lies not in the current highest office holders that will be axed with a change in administration, but previous axed highest office holders who went back a long way to the Clinton and Obama Administrations, and may even include Obama and Hillary Clinton – in this case not axed, but retired highest office holders.
They are the real puppet masters, who will continue leading the foot soldiers from behind without being seen.
This is not a conspiracy theory, as many senior investigative journalists and scholars are already saying that the puppet masters behind Joe Biden’s abrupt withdrawal from the 2024 election, with Kamala Harris being his replacement, are Obama and Clinton.
So, the true indicator of Trump’s commitment and seriousness for a ceasefire in the sense of whether it is to pressure Netanyahu to accept it or to give him a breather for his next brutal move to eliminate, not so much Hamas per se, but the Palestinians as a whole, lies in this very scary scenario: The assassination attempt on Donald Trump ala the Empire Strikes Back during Inauguration Day.
Would Trump be assassinated by the Deep State for this pressure against Netanyahu to accept a ceasefire?
Is that why the latest news today (Jan 18) talks about an indoor Inauguration Ceremony, with a record coldest weather in the US which is a fact, as an excuse?
Which means Trump and his team are ready for this eventuality.
Secret Service, watch out your phones, pagers and walkie-talkies. Expect the unexpected!
Just saying!
