• The heading for this first edition of Let’s Talk! without fear or favour for the new year of 2024 is rather bold in predicting the end of the US empire, Pax Americana.
  • Firstly a caveat – this is just a prediction, and as with all predictions, it could be right or wrong.
  • Nevertheless, the inspiration for your editor’s bold prediction lies in the fact that he sees many nuggets of happenings since the Ukraine war unfolded in 2022 that could be described simply as a manifestation that the writings are already on the wall for an impending collapse of the US empire.
  • But first an update of recent happenings.
  • As your editor emphasised in previous editions of Let’s Talk!, both the US and the Axis of Resistance do not want to escalate the Gaza war that will morph into a regional war involving major powers, as this could lead to a world war with millions killed and untold damages to the world economy.
  • There seem to be a “tacit understanding” between the US and the Resistance not to attack (read: sink) or kill each other military assets and personnel so as to prevent the kind of escalations that lead to a regional war.
  • That is why despite escalations occurring all over the high seas in the Middle East, the feared regional war did not happen.
  • This is because there is no loss of American lives or Resistance’s lives in the escalations that had happened so far.
  • Only when the escalations came from Israel, we can see the loss of Resistance’s lives, and as a consequence Hezbollah or the Iraqi militias will respond with an escalation that resulted in the loss of Israeli lives.
  • All these escalations have at its roots the deep angst against the genocide of the Palestinians by Israel in the Gaza war, and its refusal to comply with both the UN General Assembly and Security Council resolutions for a permanent humanitarian ceasefire.
  • Gaza is now in a state of humanitarian disaster with all especially children suffering from acute hunger while being homeless and facing the threat of spreading diseases because of Israel’s refusal to let in humanitarian assistance when it refuses to comply with international resolutions for a permanent ceasefire.
  • The world as a whole is giving the Gazans a deafening silence to its plea for mercy and assistance, with heart-wrenching pictures that speak vividly of their sufferings published by the media including the global mainstream media.
  • While all this is happening, Israel is even talking openly of an ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians when it says that it is currently negotiating with some countries (Congo is mentioned) for them to accept the “resettlement” of the Gazans in these far-away places from the place the Gazans called home.
  • According to military experts, this is a forcible exile of a people which constitutes a war crime under international humanitarian laws.
  • And yet the Americans and the Europeans are still in their deafening silence mode when not one of them speaks against this.
  • Instead of doing something to prevent this or condemning Israel for this evil scheme, the US is bent on escalating the Gaza war into a regional war despite professing its “disdain” for a regional war.
  • On New Year’s Eve, the US navy sank three Yemeni boats killing 10 Houthis fighters on the high sea of the Middle East – what a cruel way to welcome the New Year!
  • This is not the first time a US naval ship is confronting the Houthis. In previous occasions when this happened, the US will shoot at the Houthis missiles that are moving towards the cargo ship.
  • And if there were no Houthis missiles to shoot because they had already been shot at the ship without loss of lives, the US navy will just fire towards the direction of the Houthis as the latter made their escape to safety.
  • But this time around the US shot with an intent to sink the three small boats of the Houthis navy leaving unscathed their main naval ship.
  • This breaches the “tacit understanding” mentioned above between the US and the Resistance not to sink or kill each other military assets or personnel.
  • The US itself immediately understood that its action tantamount to opening a can of worms and quickly announced on Jan 1 the repatriation of its naval fleet USS Gerald Ford back home to Norfolk Virginia from the Mediterranean as if running “helter-skelter” away from Houthis’ retaliation.
  • The Houthis had previously warned that if the US were to attack its navy or Yemen itself, they will retaliate by sinking one of the US naval fleet.
  • From the US perspective, it sent two huge armada of naval fleet at the beginning of the Gaza war to project power in the high seas which reflect its growing concern that the deadly fighting between Hamas and Israel could escalate into wider regional conflict.
  • So the key mission for American ships and warplanes is to establish a large and visible presence to help defend Israel by deterring Iran, Hezbollah or others from taking advantage of the situation even though it knew none of these actors were involved in the Oct 7 Hamas attack on Israel.
  • On Nov 27 when the USS Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group transited through the Strait of Hormuz and into the Persian Gulf, it  was within striking distance of Iran.
  • Some military analysts then were concerned that the Biden administration may succumb to the wish of the neo-cons for it to strike Iran by raining down cruise missiles ala the shock and awe blitzkrieg on Iraq during the 2003 Gulf war.
  • There are some parties in the US gunning for a war with Iran notable among them are the neo-con Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and former National Security Advisor, the mustachioed neo-lib John Bolton.
  • Graham made it publicly clear that he wanted the Biden administration to go to war with Iran in order to cut the head of the snake of the Resistance.
  • But to its credit, the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group sent a clear message to Iran about American intentions to defend maritime security, and not to attack Iran.
  • “While in the Arabian Gulf, the IKECSG are patrolling to ensure freedom of navigation in key international waterways while supporting CENTCOM requirements throughout the region,” said Central Command in a statement then.
  • The carrier’s transit through this maritime flashpoint follows shortly after news of attacks on two Israeli-linked vessels, the boxship CMA CGM Symi and the product tanker Central Park.
  • While the world is bracing for the expected response from the Resistance to the sinking of the Yemeni boats and the accompanying loss of lives of the Yemenis, the unexpected happened.
  • Deputy leader of the Hamas Political Bureau, Saleh al-Arouri, was killed in a drone attack in Lebanon which bore the hallmark of an Israeli operation.
  • This was followed by a huge blast in Iran killing so many people near General Qassem Solemani’s tomb who was killed by President Donald Trump in 2020.
  • Arouri’s assassination was in a way the “expected unexpected” in the sense that in August, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu had threatened to assassinate him.
  • In response, Arouri answered: “Abu Ammar [Yaser Arafat] was martyred along with Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and all the leaders of Hamas. Abu Ali Mustafa [PFLP leader] and thousands of martyrs. Our blood and souls are not more precious or more valued than any martyr. First and last, the martyr who preceded us is superior to us.”
  • The culture of deceits on the part of the Israeli leadership and officials is very obvious for the whole world to see.
  • Netanyahu’s advisor, Mark Regev, denied responsibility, telling MSNBC: “We did not claim responsibility for the Beirut attack, and it did not target the Lebanese government or Hezbollah.”
  • An hour earlier, however, Israel’s ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan said: “I congratulate the Israeli army, Shin Bet, Mossad and security forces on the assassination of Hamas Terrorist leader Saleh Al-Arouri.”
  • Arouri played an important role in executing “Operation Faithful To The Free” which led to the exchange of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit for 1,027 Palestinian prisoners, including Yahya Sinwar, the top Hamas political leader in Gaza.
  • While based in Beirut, Arouri coordinated closely with Hezbollah’s Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah and Iranian officials as part of the Axis of Resistance.
  • Amid Israel’s fear of retaliation especially the illegal settlers in northern Israel, the retaliation was swift when Hezbollah bombed numerous Israeli military sites.
  • Meanwhile the Houthis continue its strike of Israeli-bound ship in the Red Sea while Hamas intensifies its attrition of IDF soldiers as the latter retreated from Gaza.
  • Judging from the fiery statements of Iran Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei and Hezbollah’s Nasrallah it really looks like it is no longer a question of “if” but “when” will regional war occur.
  • Nasrallah while emphasising the group’s commitment to protect Lebanon from Israeli aggression, also said of the willingness and capability to wage a war “without limits” against Israel if necessary.
  • Noting that Israel’s strength relies on its “ability to terrorise”, Nasrallah also said this ability started to weaken when Hezbollah expelled Israeli forces from southern Lebanon in 2000 and weakened further after Hezbollah inflicted defeat on Israel during the July War in 2006.
  • He went on to say that Israel is now even weaker. Hamas was not scared when it launched the Al-Aqsa Flood operation on October 7, and Hezbollah was not scared when it opened the front against Israel in southern Lebanon the next day.
  • The Hezbollah leader also stressed that both resistance groups are today more willing to face Israel than ever before.
  • And even Yemen was not scared of Israel. Yemen did not think of Israeli retaliation when launching attacks on Israeli ports or ships in support of Gaza. Nor was Yemen scared of retaliation from the US.
  • After the 2006 war, he added, Israeli declared the next war would be short, quick, and victorious. But now after three months of military operations in Gaza, nothing has been quick, no achievements have been clear, and nothing has been victorious.
  • And no one in Israel is “claiming victory in Gaza.” Instead, they tried to claim victory through the “cowardly assassination” of Arouri.
  • Nasrallah explained that one of the most important outcomes of the Al-Aqsa Flood operation is the way the image of the US has been tarnished.
  • All of the killing Israel is undertaking in Gaza is done with US weapons, while the US has blocked all efforts to reach a ceasefire through the UN by vetoing Security Council resolutions.
  • No one is fooled by US claims that Israel is not targeting civilians. “Have the 20,000 or more Palestinian martyrs been killed on accident?” Nasrallah asked.
  • He detailed how there was a discussion in Israel’s war cabinet in which an Israeli general said he twice told Netanyahu not to open a war with Lebanon because it would lead to the destruction of two thirds of Israel.
  • What has protected Lebanon is that “we are strong and have weapons,” Nasrallah added.
  • “In the past, just one of the operations we regularly carry out along the border against Israel would have caused Israel to open a full scale war against us. Why has it not done so after hundreds of such operations? Because Lebanon is strong.
  • “What happened yesterday is dangerous,” Nasrallah warned, in a reference to Israel’s killing of Arouri in a drone strike in the Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh.
  • “Last night we received a message from Israel saying they did not mean to attack Lebanon.” Arouri’s killing was just an attack on Hamas, Nasrallah said.
  • “But what happened yesterday was dangerous and criminal and this crime shall not pass without retaliation, and there are between us days and nights.”
  • But if Israel is considering launching a war on Lebanon, then “we will fight with no end, with no limitations, and the enemy knows this. We are not afraid of war.”
  • “The Americans threatened us. And the French and the English. We did not stop. Whoever thinks of launching a war against us will regret it.
  • “So far, we have acted with restraint for the sake of Lebanon’s interests, but if Israel insists on starting a war with us, then Lebanon’s interests will demand that we fight to the very end, with no limit,” Nasrallah said.
  • In Iran, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei in response to the killing of over 200 Iranians in a terror attack in Kerman, offered condolences to families of martyrs and vowed that the terrorists responsible for the attack would receive a severe response.
  • In a statement on Jan 3, Sayyed Khamenei said the “wicked enemies” of Iran could not tolerate the reverence and love for General Qassem Soleimani and visits to his place of rest on the anniversary of his martyrdom.
  • He vowed that the perpetrators would face justice and the soldiers of Soleimani’s path would not tolerate crime and villainy.
  • Meanwhile in a further sign of division between staunch allies, the US is blaming Israel for the assassination of Arouri and admitting that Hamas possesses significant force that Israel can’t eliminate it.
  • This goes to show that the US seems to accept the inevitability of a regional war and is very worried about it.
  • Israel too seems to accept the inevitability of a regional war when its security establishment warned, following its evaluation of the situation on the front with the Lebanese Resistance, that “in the next war in the North” there would be “6,000 rockets in the first days”.
  • The warning was published by KodKod Group on their Telegram channel where they quoted the establishment saying, “According to the scenario, in one day of fighting, Israel will have to deal with the firing of thousands of rockets, and in the first days of the war, about 6,000 rockets will be fired at Israel.”
  • The report then noted that as the war extends over several days, “the number will decrease” gradually to reach about “2,000-1,500 rockets a day”.
  • As such, the report emphasised what is expected by Israeli security experts is that daily, Israel will be set to deal with approximately 1,500 attacks, which were characterised as effective on Israeli territory, given that “this is after subtracting the astronomical numbers … that will fall in open areas, and successful interceptions by the ‘Iron Dome’.
  • “On that note, Israeli occupation experts criticised the Israeli Iron Dome saying “with all due respect to it and its operators, there are very few chances that it will be able to show such high interception rates as we have been used to in the recent rounds of fighting in the South.”
  • It is to be noted that the escalation into a regional war is not in the interest of Israel but it is in the interest of Netanyahu because it will prolong the Hamas-Israel war that affords him the premiership as a protection against going to jail for his massive corruption charges.
  • Another development which was not reported in the media was the death of an Israeli journalist, Jerry Yorkam, killed on Jan 1 purportedly by Mossad in the city of Akka for publishing information on the casualties figures that IDF had suffered up to day 84 of the Gaza war which began on Oct 7.
  • The documented information came to light after Yorkam’s death, as reported by some Telegram channels. The information given by him were as follows:
  • As of day 84 of the war, the total number of vehicles that were partially or completely destroyed by Hamas was 825.
  • The number of Israeli soldiers killed was 8,435; French soldiers who had died were 902; US soldiers, 1,385; British soldiers, 79; Italian soldiers, 48; and mercenaries, 62.
  • The figures provided by Yorkam corresponded to the number of frozen containers on board the MGZ, anchored some distance from the port of Haifa and controlled by the American navy.
  • It was noted that a large number of small boats were shuttled from there which prompted the journalist to find this information that shook Tel Aviv.
  • The ship was reported to have disappeared from view after the killing and was last seen for a few hours in the port of Cyprus.
  • Finally, two more updates – on Jan 4, the US military carried out a strike in Baghdad against an Iraqi militia leader it blames for attacks against US forces in the country, killing him and another person, a US official told Reuters.
  • The US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the strike hit a vehicle in Baghdad. It targeted a leader of Harakat al Nujaba, the official said, without naming the person.
  • Earlier the Popular Mobilization Force said the strike in Baghdad had killed a military commander of the ex-paramilitary force, with an Iraq security official reporting two deaths in a drone attack.
  • The Iraqi government described the attack as an “aggression” and accused a US-led international coalition in Iraq but stopped short of pinning the blame on Washington, as regional tensions soar amid the Israel-Hamas war.
  • A day before the Baghdad strike, Washington and its allies in the anti-Yemen naval task force had issued an ultimatum to the Ansarallah resistance movement, warning them to cease their attacks in the Red Sea or suffer the “consequences.”
  • “Ongoing Houthi attacks in the Red Sea are illegal, unacceptable, and profoundly destabilizing. There is no lawful justification for intentionally targeting civilian shipping and naval vessels,” a joint statement drafted by 12 countries and released by the White House said on Jan 3.
  • But when your editor counts the number of participating countries which include three Asian countries – Japan, South Korea and Singapore – in the White House statement, the total is 14 countries including the US.
  • “Let our message now be clear: we call for the immediate end of these illegal attacks and release of unlawfully detained vessels and crews. The Houthis will bear the responsibility of the consequences should they continue to threaten lives, the global economy, and free flow of commerce in the region’s critical waterways.”
  • A US official indicated that this warning could be considered a final notice. The statement followed Yemen’s latest strike on a vessel bound for Israel.
  • Earlier, the Yemeni navy targeted the CMA CGM TAGE vessel which “was heading to the ports of occupied Palestine,” Sanaa’s armed forces said in a statement.
  • A day after the final ultimatum was issued, Yemen shows its defiance.
  • The British newspaper Financial Times announced that the Yemeni Armed Forces detonated an unmanned naval vessel in the Red Sea on Jan 4 in an incident described as the first of its kind involving the use of unmanned naval vessels in their operations in the Red Sea.
  • The newspaper highlighted that, despite the absence of damage to any ships in the explosion of the unmanned boat, this scenario “poses a challenge to the United States.”
  • One can see that instead of deescalating the situation after its major escalation on Dec 31 by sinking Yemeni ships, the US seems to revel in further escalations by killing a Resistance leader in Iraq and issuing a final ultimatum to the Houthis.
  • Also as seen from the ultimatum statement, the context on why the Houthis continue to threaten lives, the global economy, and free flow of commerce in the region’s critical waterways is not only conveniently ignored but not addressed at all.
  • Isn’t this a double standard seen also in the US position on the Ukraine war.
  • As veteran journalist John Helmer in his blog, Dances with Bears, headlined one of his articles: “Because of Israel’s war against Palestine, there are no innocent ships at sea”. Please address this America and your allies.
  • In fact some say the carnage in Iran near General Qassem Solaimani’s tomb could be a false flagged US operation in which the terror group Isis has claimed credit.
  • And to top it all, in a dramatic irony, the White House is worried that the conflict in Gaza could expand to other parts of the Middle East and is drawing up plans for a possible US response if that happens, Politico has reported, citing informed officials.
  • Internal discussions are underway in the Biden administration about scenarios that could see Washington drawn into a major war in the region, the outlet said in an article on Jan 4.
  • The potential for a wider conflict in the Middle East is growing, said sources including a senior Biden administration official.
  • The events of the past few days “have convinced some in the administration that the war in Gaza has officially escalated far beyond the strip’s borders,” Politico wrote.
  • Well, it looks like if last year the theme of global events is the failure of the US and its allies to anticipate and expect the unexpected, just a few days into the new year, the US seems to be able to anticipate and expect the unexpected.
  • It seem to do this in a very proactive way in “staging and dramatising” the unexpected.
  • Whether this could hasten the end of the US Empire just like beads strung on a string follow one another very quickly when the string is broken, only time will tell.
  • Since writing the article on “The Decline of the US Empire” in this news magazine in May 2023, which pointed to a tectonic SHIFT in the world order, events are now pointing strongly and perhaps conclusively to a tectonic CHANGE in the world order which can happen at any point in time this year.
  • There are many nuggets of happenings since the Ukraine war unfolded in 2022 that could be described simply as a manifestation that the writings are already on the wall for an impending collapse of the US empire.
  • Among some of these happenings that we can see are how Europe has suddenly become so subservient to the US that it is already an “occupied territory” of the USA, so to speak, much in the same way the USA has suddenly become the “occupied territory” of Israel.
  • The rise of Russia, China and India as superpowers, along with the consolidation of Brics as Brics-10 on January 1 is also another factor to consider.
  • In addition, there is also the explicit shift in global public opinion which favours Russia in the Ukraine war, and especially the Palestinians in the Gaza war.
  • In the case of the former, the seemingly invincible global public opinion on Russophobia influenced and shaped by the US and the collective west with their strong linkage to political Zionism shifted in favour of Russia about one and half years after the war commenced when the Ukrainian counter offensive in June lost steam.
  • More stunning is the latter, when for more than 75 years the invincible global public opinion which favours the US, Europe and Israel shifted in favour of the Palestinians.
  • The US and Europe through the Jewish lobby fought back to wrest control of the global public opinion by passing a law that any criticism of Israel, even the criticism of its genocide on Palestinian civilians, is a punishable offence because it is a form of hate speech i.e. anti-Semitism that mars the memory of the Holocaust.
  • But judging by the continuous weekend protests worldwide calling for an end to the genocide and for an immediate permanent ceasefire in the Gaza war to be implemented, this attempt at stifling pro-Palestinian stance seems to be a miserable failure.
  • Your editor has a very sad experience on this when a tycoon friend of his accused him of indulging in hate speech in response to a WhatsApp message your editor sent on how some of the Iron Dome missiles of Israel malfunctioned.
  • Instead of exploding in mid-air without hitting Hamas incoming rockets, they made a U-turn and hit Israel’s residential areas and a military base.
  • Perhaps it was when your editor said that this is the work of Allah that the accusation of hate speech was levelled against him.
  • Because this tycoon has an extensive business dealings in the US, he may be very much influenced with the US’ attempt to stifle criticism of Israel in the spirit of the recent introduction of its law on anti-Semitism, despite insisting that he is neutral.
  • But it is a good thing that your editor is residing in Malaysia where such law is non-existent because both the government of Malaysia led by Anwar Ibrahim and the majority of its citizens support the struggle of the Palestinians to free themselves from Israeli occupation and to have an independent state of their own.
  • Let’s get to the roots of what anti-Semitism is all about.
  • The Semitic people traces their descent from Sem (or Sham in the Islamic tradition) who was one of Prophet Noah’s (Nuh) sons, hence the adjective Semitic to describe this people.
  • One of the descendants of Sem is the Patriarch of the three Abrahamic religions, Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him).
  • Abraham has two sons – elder son Ishmael (Ismail) and Isaac (Ishak). While the descendants of Ismail are the Arabs, the descendants of Isaac through Jacob (Yaacob) are the Jews.
  • So Arab and Jew are brethren to each other as their progenitors are siblings. This fact alone should make Arabs and Jews live harmoniously among each other because they came from the same family tree.
  • But due to centuries of pogroms and persecutions of the Jews by the Christian West culminating in the Holocaust in the 20th century, the West perhaps out of guilt-conscious invented the term “anti-Semitism” to atone for their cruelties to the Jews by being their protector.
  • In this regard, during the pogroms and persecutions it was to the Muslim Arab countries that the Jews fled for safety and protection, and the Arabs being their brethren took good care of them.
  • So from all these elucidations, anti-Semitism as conceived by the West should not be exclusively meant for the protection of Jews alone but also the Arabs because they are also a Semitic people.
  • Seen from this perspective Islamophobia which includes the dehumanising of the Palestinian Arabs should also be seen as anti-Semitism.
  • But in the overall scheme of things, anti-Semitism whether as a form of protection for the Jews or Arabs or both is an exclusivist concept because by right all oppressed people should be afforded protection and not just the Jews and Arabs.
  • Anyway the Arabs have never asked from the West protection in the form of anti-Semitism.
  • So it’s best that the term anti-Semitism be eliminated from the English vocabulary especially when its use has been hijacked by political Zionism to perpetuate its cruelty on fellow Semites, the Palestinians.
  • Back to the narrative on the end of the US Empire.
  • It is also your editor’s contention the seeming contradiction that the longer the Gaza war takes place, the faster and sudden the end of the US Empire will be, just like beads strung on a string follow one another very quickly like dominoes when the string is broken.
  • It is also important to note that the end of an empire does not mean the empire will immediately cease to exist.
  • The “demise” of the Soviet Union for instance actually occurred in 1989 with the collapse of the Berlin wall, which signalled the end of the Cold War but the Soviet Union still existed for two more years until its total eclipse in 1991.
  • Similarly the demise of the British Empire (Pax Britannica) occurred in the aftermath of WWI when many of its colonies became independent through the blood, sweat and tears of the struggle for independence of the people in the colonies.
  • Yet the British Empire continued to exist right through WWII and collapsed only in the aftermath of the war when more colonies were reluctantly given independence, the British pound sterling ceased to be the reserve currency of the world and Britain as a former superpower had to beg for “monetary mercy” from the IMF to borrow monies in 1976.
  • Once in a while perhaps due to nostalgia and deep longing for a revival of its Empire, the British government did act like it’s still an Empire by sending a warship to Guyana in order to intervene in the latter’s current territorial dispute with Venezuela when Guyana does not even request for military assistance.
  • Or when Britain announced its warship will ply the Black Sea to protect Ukrainian ports in Odessa and Izmail from Russian attack in the Ukraine war.
  • It was only when Venezuela responded with sending its navy to patrol the international waters near its border that Britain woke up from its dream and got real by withdrawing its warship from the area.
  • Ditto with its dreamy foray to the Black Sea when Russia responded by saying that all British warships or vessels in the Black Sea will be regarded as legitimate target of attack that we don’t hear any more of this British bravado and nostalgia.
